Over the past two decades, the Pinault Collection, which now comprises more than 10,000 works, has been revealed to the public through exhibitions presented in its museums and within the walls of partner institutions.
This book offers a new perspective on the collection, not from the angle of an exhibition catalogue, but through a selection of more than a hundred masterpieces. In a publication such as this, it is the collector's perspective that is highlighted, as he not only acquired the selected works, but also validated the choice to designate certain ones as masterpieces.
Rather than providing an exhaustive description, this catalogue offers an overview of the diversity of the Pinault Collection, from video installations to paintings and sculptures, while presenting a possible history of art over the last sixty years.
Taking as its starting point a work by Lucio Fontana dating from 1958, this publication offers a chronological overview, with each work accompanied by a short note written by international specialists. From Georg Baselitz to Maurizio Cattelan, Urs Fischer, Felix Gonzalez-Torres and David Hammons, via Dan Flavin, this body of work presents a diverse panorama and reflects the richness of contemporary creation.
With texts by Jean-Jacques Aillagon, former president of the Centre Pompidou, former Minister of Culture and close advisor to François Pinault, Emma Lavigne, director of the Pinault Collection, and Max Hollein, director of the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
With a selection of works, presented in chronological order, from Adel ABDESSEMED, Josef ALBERS, Kai ALTHOFF, El ANATSUI, Giovanni ANSELMO, Michael ARMITAGE, Lucas ARRUDA, Georg BASELITZ, Larry BELL, Alighiero BOETTI, Frank BOWLING, Marcel BROODTHAERS, James Lee BYARS, Miriam CAHN, Pier Paolo CALZOLARI, Enrico CASTELLANI, Maurizio CATTELAN, CHEN Zhen, Xinyi CHENG, Judy CHICAGO, Tacita DEAN, Edith DEKYNDT, Niki DE SAINT PHALLE, Peter DOIG, Marlene DUMAS, Nicole EISENMANN, Luciano FABRO, Urs FISCHER, Peter FISCHLI & David WEISS, Dan FLAVIN, Lucio FONTANA, GILBERT & GEORGE, Robert GOBER, Dominique GONZALEZ-FOERSTER, Félix GONZALEZ-TORRES, Wade GUYTON, David HAMMONS, Duane HANSON, Damien HIRST, David HOCKNEY, Roni HORN, Thomas HOUSEAGO, Pierre HUYGHE, Anne IMHOF, Arthur JAFA, Donald JUDD, Amar KANWAR, On KAWARA, Mike KELLEY, Edward KIENHOLZ, KIMSOOJA, Martin KIPPENBERGER, Kiki KOGELNIK, Jeff KOONS, Jannis KOUNELLIS, Florian KREWER, Bertrand LAVIER, Julio LE PARC, Sherrie LEVINE, Sol LEWITT, Francesco LO SAVIO, Lee LOZANO, Victor MAN, Piero MANZONI, Christian MARCLAY, Brice MARDEN, Kerry James MARSHALL, Agnes MARTIN, Paul MCCARTHY, Julie MEHRETU, Cildo MEIRELES, Mario MERZ, François MORELLET, Takashi MURAKAMI, Bruce NAUMAN, Shirin NESHAT, Roman OPALKA, Philippe PARRENO, Giuseppe PENONE, Blinky PALERMO, Lygia PAPE, Michelangelo PISTOLETTO, Sigmar POLKE, Richard PRINCE, Charles RAY, Martial RAYSSE, Bridget RILEY, Robert RYMAN, Ed RUSCHA, Anri SALA & Sejla KAMERIC, Mohammed SAMI, Thomas SCHÜTTE, Richard SERRA, Wael SHAWKY, Pierre SOULAGES, Rudolf STINGEL, STURTEVANT, Alina SZAPOCZNIKOW, Claire TABOURET, Henry TAYLOR, Tatiana TROUVÉ, Anne TRUITT, Luc TUYMANS, Cy TWOMBLY, Bill VIOLA, Danh VO, Kara WALKER, Franz WEST, Rachel WHITEREAD, Christopher WOOL, Anicka YI, Lynette YIADOM-BOAKYE
