Catalogue of the exhibition Lilette and Gilbert Valentin: When the Earth Becomes Light, presented at the Espace Lympia, Nice (16 May – 18 October 2026).
In 1950, in Vallauris, Gilbert and Lilette Valentin founded Les Archanges, an iconic venue for the post-war revival of French ceramics. Their work, centred on pottery, the creation of glazes and experimentation with forms and materials, was part of a free and innovative creative process. A versatile artist, Gilbert Valentin was also a sculptor and painter.
Based on Chemin du Fournas in a former pignate factory converted into a studio, home and gallery, they turned Les Archanges into a hub of bohemian life and artistic exchange. Many artists were welcomed there, including Pablo Picasso, Jacques Prévert, Georges Braque and Jean Cocteau, who went on to become a dear friend of the family.
