Animal Sketching was the first book published by Alexander Calder in New York in 1926, shortly before he left for France.
This book, essential for understanding Calder’s work, is a study devoted to a dozen animals and their movements, illustrated with numerous drawings. It foreshadows the ingenious sculptural work he would produce in Paris the following year for The Miniature Circus, in which he brings three-dimensional characters and animals to life.
Facsimile reprint of the book, featuring its French translation and an introduction by Arnauld Pierre, a specialist in Calder.
Arnauld Pierre is a professor of contemporary art history at the University of Paris-Sorbonne (Paris IV) and a specialist in Calder.
