The Cluny Museum guide presents over two hundred works illustrating the different periods covered by the collections of this unique venue, which combines Gallo-Roman baths and a 15th-century mansion.
While the famous Lady and the Unicorn tapestry is the highlight, these collections offer visitors a rich overview of Western art from Antiquity and the early Middle Ages to the end of the 15th century, through sculptures, ivories, gold and silverware, stained glass windows, paintings and tapestries.
When visitors look at the Cluny Museum site today, they see a veritable architectural mille-feuille. Ancient thermal baths, a late medieval mansion, successive extensions in the 19th and 21st centuries: the site has been in continuous use and its architecture has evolved over time.
Placed under the aegis of the Commission of Historic Monuments, the museum covers the history of art from antiquity to the Renaissance and has benefited from a host of donations, such as the Apostles and stained glass from the Sainte-Chapelle.
