Francis I is looked upon as the emblematic monarch of the French Renaissance. Art and literature flourished and the ideas of the Italian Renaissance spread during the reign of this builder-king and patron of arts and letters.

Joos van Clève, one of the most important Dutch painters of his time, was attracted to artistic ferment of Paris during the reign of Francis I. Joos van Clève painted this portrait of the king during his visit to Paris between 1530 and 1535, at a time when Paris had once again became the ordinary residence of the Monarchy. In this painting, he is depicted in the manner of the leading humanists of that period.
