Catalogue of the exhibition To Vincent, a Winter's Tale, presented at the Van Gogh Foundation Arles (30 November 2025 - 26 April 2026).
Composed like a tale, this book brings together works by artists and writers whose work responds to the philosophical, artistic and existential questions raised by Vincent van Gogh in the correspondence he wrote during his stay in Provence (1888–1890).
Van Gogh's stay in Provence, from his arrival in Arles in the snow in February 1888 to his departure from Saint-Rémy-de-Provence twenty-seven months later, seems both romantic and tragic. The intensity of his painting, the significant development of his correspondence, his yellow house, Gauguin's visit, his mutilated ear, and his bouts of depression are all ingredients that fuel the legend of the artist, a true winter tale.
Beyond the myth, however, lies the reality of his work, which flourished during this period, and his letters, which became a laboratory for deepening his artistic thinking. The Dutch master's work took on such significance that it continues to inspire creators around the world today and confirms Vincent's position as a “link in the chain of artists”.
Artists presented : Harold Ancart, Jacopo Benassi, Martin Boyce, James Castle, Louise Chennevière, Gérard Collin-Thiébaut, Rineke Dijkstra, Simone Fattal, Gustave Fayet, Dominique Ferrat, Joseph Grigely, Nathanaëlle Herbelin, Isidore Isou, Ann Veronica Janssens, Hans Josephsohn, Anselm Kiefer, Mark Manders, Sylvain Prudhomme, Louise Sartor, Wolfgang Tillmans, Rico Weber and Vincent van Gogh.
