Catalogue of the exhibition Toulouse-Lautrec and e Art of the Poster . Complete Works, presented at the Toulouse-Lautrec Museum, Albi (29 April – 31 August 2025).
This book presents all of Toulouse-Lautrec's restored posters, comparing them with the work of other renowned poster artists such as Jules Chéret and Alfons Mucha.
To understand the artist's creative process, the posters are also compared with the sketches and preparatory work that preceded them.
The technique used to create the posters is studied and presented in detail through intermediate prints that illustrate the stages of production.
Three essays (by Fanny Girard, curator and director of the Toulouse-Lautrec Museum in Albi; Phillip Dennis Cate, 19th-century specialist and director emeritus of the Jane Voorhees Zimmerli Art Museum at Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey; Jennifer Heim, head of posters, prints, and wallpaper, Musée Carnavalet - Histoire de Paris) place the artist and his work in the historical, economic, and social context of the time, shedding particular light on the rise of illustrated posters in the late 19th century and the resulting exhibition and collection practices.
