Chantilly Castle is one of the jewels of France’s cultural heritage. It is also the creation of a man with an exceptional destiny: Henri d’Orléans, Duke of Aumale, son of Louis-Philippe. This prince, regarded as the greatest collector of his time, made Chantilly the setting for his countless masterpieces and precious manuscripts. The château has stood the test of time, remaining much as the Duke of Aumale bequeathed it to the Institut de France in 1886. In homage to his illustrious predecessors, the Princes of Condé, the Duke of Aumale named the complex the ‘Condé Museum’.
Featuring around a hundred works, the museum’s collections guide will showcase remarkable paintings organised by artistic schools, including the Italian School (one of the most prestigious after the Louvre) with Fra Angelico and Raphael; the French School, notably featuring Poussin, Ingres and Delacroix; and the Northern Schools: Rubens, Van Dyck, Rembrandt… as well as furniture, works of art, sculptures and an impressive library of ancient manuscripts, including the most famous illuminated manuscript, "Les Très Riches Heures du duc de Berry" (15th century).
This guide, featuring an unrivalled collection, is designed as a collector’s item to serve as a memento of this extraordinary place. Particular care has been taken with the production of the covers, featuring gold lettering for the French edition and silver lettering for the English edition. The layout of the paintings reproduced on the covers is intended to resemble a 19th-century art exhibition: paintings displayed very closely together, from floor to ceiling, in the style of the salons of that era.
