Oli Epp - Hors d'oeuvres

Born in London in 1994, Oli Epp belongs to the generation that grew up in a digital technology environment.The artist produces very smooth paintings, treated with polished flat colours and blurred areas created with an airbrush.

The light diffuses in a surreal impression of a backlit screen. The graphic simplicity and seemingly easy interpretation of the paintings actually mask a social satire of rare depth.

In 56 pages and three languages, the book literally takes us on a tour of the ‘Hors d'Oeuvres’ exhibition organised in spring 2025 at the NTNU Museum in Taipei (Taiwan), showing us behind the scenes and the preparation in the studio, listening to the artist distil a few keys to understanding his portrait-objects, and looking to Renaissance artists for connections and influences. The thirteen paintings in the exhibition are analysed from every angle, in search of the hidden door that would lead to the other side of the screen.
