Often reduced to the "culture of Montmartre", Toulouse-Lautrec's work nevertheless transcends this cliché. If the artist marvellously represented the electricity of the Parisian night and its pleasures, Toulouse-Lautrec was above all driven by an aesthetic ambition, that of translating the reality of modern society into its multiple facets.
