When it was first announced in 1984, I. M. Pei's project to build a glass Pyramid in the courtyard of the Louvre was considered surprising. Twenty years after its inauguration, the Pyramid has become a symbol of the Louvre Museum and, indeed, of Paris : more than eight million visitors pass through it every year.
