Catalogue of the exhibition Picasso Ceramics: Multiple Techniques, presented at the Magnelli Museum, Vallauris (5 July–30 September 2025).
Picasso never considered ceramics to be a minor art form and was thus able to use this medium to explore artistic practices that had preoccupied him since his Cubist years.
Ceramics also allowed him to reconnect with ancient and popular traditions, as well as with the iconography and myths of the Mediterranean region.
After a few experiments at the beginning of the century, Picasso did not devote himself to ceramics until 1947, in the Madoura workshop in Vallauris. The artist then authorised Suzanne and Georges Ramié to produce limited edition reproductions of some of his ceramics, covering his entire output between 1947 and 1971. These editions, which are a continuation of his work, helped to popularise his art.
