The Textile Biennale, formerly known as the International Festival of Extraordinary Textiles (FITE), is dedicated to the theme of ‘Beauty(ies)’ for this latest edition. Through the works of 120 artists from 24 different countries, the exhibition uses textiles as a universal language to foster dialogue between cultures and transcend nationalism.
Organised in collaboration with the MEG, the Geneva Museum of Ethnography, the Textile Biennale showcases contemporary and heritage textile works from all five continents.
Beauty stands in opposition to globalisation and any monolithic view of the world. Its definition merges with the one Césaire chose to describe universalism: ‘the sum of all particularities’. ’ Textiles therefore seem to be the most appropriate language for presenting a beauty stripped of all concept. Textiles are not conceived in the mind: they are woven, using fibres and patterns drawn from the four corners of the world.
The Textile Biennale reinvents itself with each edition by joining forces with a new international partner, before travelling to that partner’s country.
