Catalogue of the exhibition “Serigne Ibrahima Dieye. Human diffraction”, presented at the Suquet des artistes, Cannes (January 22 - April 23, 2023).

Often working on large formats, frequently on square-format canvases which are reminiscent of contemporary image models, the artist mixes symbols, shapes and materials. Serigne Ibrahima Dieye thus composes the strange scenes of a contemporary theater in which hybrid animals and mysterious figures are the protagonists.

Then begins the story of urban fables, both whimsical and dramatic, which borrow their subject from various cultures and draw their depth from the nebulae of history and current events. Serigne Ibrahima Dieye explores the powers of the grotesque to denounce. Laughter, grating and cynical, becomes under the brush of the artist a disarming tool to give food for thought to the making of a society obsessed with communication and drunk with appearances. For the artist, the space of art then operates as a visual elixir of truth for contemporary society and the evils that agitate it.

Born in 1988 in Dakar, Senegal. Serigne Ibrahima Dieye lives and works in Grand Mbao, Senegal. Trained at the National School of Arts in Dakar, from which he graduated in 2014, Serigne Ibrahima Dieye develops a practice at the crossroads of drawing, painting, collage and installation.
