Christian Bonnefoi's work is characterised by a unique collage technique, whereby the assembled pieces create a surface that becomes the very essence of the work, without any figuration, suggestion or narration: a way of emphasising the importance of the process, of the compositional work on the final result.
The artist traces the origins of his artistic approach to his discovery of Matisse's ‘Dos’ (Backs), presented in 1970 at the Grand Palais in Paris during the exhibition ‘Henri Matisse, l'exposition du centenaire’ (Henri Matisse, the Centenary Exhibition), which inspired his first Backs four years later. This theme has punctuated his work ever since.
