Paris 1874 - Inventing Impressionnism

Impressionnism - Editions Beaux arts - Softcover - 76 pages - Textes en English - Publié en 2024

The Musée d'Orsay is celebrating 150 years of Impressionism. The first Impressionist exhibition opened on 15 April 1874, with works by Monet, Renoir, Degas, Morisot, Pissarro, Sisley and Cézanne, all of whom decided to break with the rules by organising their own exhibitions outside the official channels. The success was unprecedented: Impressionism was born!

Exhibition details

The exhibition traces the advent of an artistic movement that emerged in a world undergoing profound change. The political climate was tense, following the Franco-Prussian War of 1870 and a violent civil war. Against this backdrop of crisis, artists rethought their art and explored new directions.

A small "clan of rebels" painted scenes of modern life, or landscapes in light tones and lively brushstrokes, sketched in the open air. As one observer noted, "what they seem to be looking for above all is the impression".

Beaux Arts Éditions looks back at this key event, which marked the birth of modern art, and at the various artists who took part in this artistic revolution.
