High society Evian. The Golden Age of the SPA

Arts décoratifs - Publisher Silvana - Broché avec rabats - 186 pages - Text in Bilingue Français / English - Published in 2018

With one and a half billion litres sold every day in some 140 countries, Evian mineral water is a well-known name right across the world. This planetary success sometimes makes us forget that, since the discovery of the therapeutic properties of the emblematic Cachat spring in the late eighteenth century, Evian has also been a well-established spa resort.

Exhibition catalogue High society Evian. The Golden Age of the SPA. Evian, Maison Gribaldi, April -  November 2018.

Frequented by the international jet set, Evian, known as “The Pearl of Lake Geneva” experienced something of a Golden Age between the Belle Époque and the inter-war period. The villas and luxury hotels at the resort welcomed prestigious guests who contributed to its fame: Gustave Eiffel, the Maharajahs of Kapurthala and Baroda, the Sultan of Morocco, Prince Takamatsu of Japan and even the Aga Khan.

The high society season was marked by events such as the Fête des Roses, sailing regattas and motor-boat races. Golf, tennis and other water sports were very popular at the resort, especially after Evian-Plage was created in 1929. From the greens to the grand concerts, dog shows and dance tournaments, drama recitals and fashion shows, “the season at Evian was one long elegant party”. At the same time treatments also evolved, moving from an empiricist approach to the rigour of diuretic therapy.

With more than 200 objects on show, the High Society Evian: The Golden Age of the Spa exhibition, and the catalogue that accompanies it, looks back on the history of the spa industry in one of the most important thermal towns in France.
