Catalogue of the exhibition L'esprit du trait. Une collection privée en Provence (The Spirit of the Line. A Private Collection in Provence), presented at the Musée des Beaux-Arts, Marseille (24 April - 31 August 2025).
A unique and remarkable collection offering an insight into the rich, dynamic and cultural history of Provence through around a hundred French drawings from the 17th to the early 19th century.
The subjects and themes covered are varied: from genre scenes to religious compositions, landscapes, studies of motifs and portraits. Works of famous artists such as Nicolas Mignard, Pierre Puget, Jean Daret and Jacques Réattu, alongside lesser-known artists, some of whom have fallen into oblivion, but who have been rediscovered in recent years through research, such as Joseph Célony, Henry d'Arles, David de Marseille, Jean-Baptiste Coste and Paul Grégoire.
Their works, divided into nine chapters, mark different periods in art history, ranging from the Baroque in Provence to the tutelary figure of Dandré-Bardon and his influence, then travelling between Italy and the portrait genre.
