Catalogue of the exhibition Anna Maria Maiolino. Je suis là. Estou Aqui, presented at the Musée Picasso, Paris (14 June - 21 September 2025).
Born in Calabria in 1942, Anna Maria Maiolino began her artistic career in Venezuela before settling in Rio de Janeiro in 1960. Although of Italian origin, she considers herself fully Brazilian, having shaped her artistic expression through contact with Brazil's rich cultural diversity.
Her work, which draws on the languages, cultures and political contexts she has encountered, reflects a profound reflection on the sense of belonging, a particularly topical theme in the era of global migration.
Maiolino fluidly explores multiple artistic languages, developing her visual vocabulary through engraving, drawing, film, photography, performance and sculpture.
Awarded the Golden Lion at the Venice Biennale in 2024, Maiolino's work is recognised as an essential contribution to contemporary art. The exhibition highlights how her attention to materials, the body and intimacy becomes an act of resistance against historical and social structures that seek to constrain individuals.
