Exhibition Clair-obscur - Pinault Collection, Bourse de Commerce, Paris

An exhibition presented at the Bourse de Commerce, Paris (until August 24, 2026)

Publié le Monday 06 April 2026

Chiaroscuro is not merely a painting technique of the past, but a visual language that spans the centuries and is constantly being reinvented, revealing the darker side of humanity and the world.

Clair-obscur, the exhibition takes its title from the famous chiaroscuro technique, which has been a feature of painting since the 16th century, through Mannerism and the Baroque period, illustrated by the work of Caravaggio, who took its use to new heights.

A selection of around a hundred works from the Pinault Collection—featuring contemporary art as well as, for the first time, modern art—offers a journey through the legacy of chiaroscuro today.

This contrast between light and darkness emerges as a renewed visual and symbolic language, a narrative device, and a philosophical principle, expressing both the materiality of light and the shadow areas of our unconscious.
