Madame Rivière is reclining on a divan, and both the setting and her attire indicate her wealth and social position: a velour cushion, a long voluminous cashmere scarf, a gold necklace and bracelet etc. These same details enable Ingres to play with the different materials and textures: the plush of the velour, the luminosity of the silk in her dress, the lightness of the white muslin and the brilliance of the black curls of Madame Rivière.
Soft wool scarf from the Louvre Musuem Gift Shop Collection, Paris. Size : 190 x 70 cm. 100% Wool. Designer : French National Museums.
